Pablo Canché Balam was a chiclero who also cultivated corn and planted coconut trees along the coast. Among the first in the area to welcome travelers, he built small cabañas where visitors could hang their hammocks by the sea. His wife, Ofelia, prepared tortillas and tamales from corn grown in their own milpa.
