Cándida Ek, known to everyone in Tulum simply as 'Abuelita', was born near Chemax and came to Tulum in 1987 after her husband passed away. When she arrived, the town was little more than a few houses without paved roads or electricity. Now nearly 80, she still works each day, selling cochinita to neighbours in the town she has watched grow from a small village into the Tulum of today.
