'Ni Una Menos' The red hand painted across the mouth is a symbol of solidarity with missing and murdered Indigenous women in North America, later adopted more broadly to denounce violence against women across all the Americas. On March 8, International Women’s Day, women throughout Mexico, Central America, and South America marched demanding stronger action against femicide and gender-based violence. This mural incorporates the red hand symbol and is modeled by a local woman from Tulum, Alma Castillo, whose family has lived in the region for over thirty years.
